New Year, New Innovation, Same Commitment

2020 has finally come to an end and it has to go down as one of the most confusing years in modern history. We are extremely grateful too have survived! Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who have experienced difficulty and loss this past year. We experienced our own sadness this year as DuraVent lost two close customers. We send our thanks to everyone connected with DuraVent/ Security Chimneys, customers, suppliers, reps and especially our employees who all stepped up. Because of that combined effort, we were able to keep the plants open and product flowing to the market.

The second half of the year was amazing as the hearth industry really took off. Everyone seemed to be remodeling their homes by buying fireplaces and stoves. We experienced record sales for the last half 2020 which certainly made up for the poor first half. It was so good, that no one in the industry was able to forecast it and we all came up short at the end of the year. Demand was so great that lead times got extended and transit times increased dramatically. We simply need to look at the chaos at the USPS to understand what was happening in the transit business. However, we made it through those challenges, and we are so grateful to our customers for their support.

As we move into the new year we still see continued strong demand for hearth products. Hopefully, this is a sign for a better 2021 for us all. We have a few new product introductions coming this year. Starting with a new and improved 1" chimney for the Canadian market which is projected to be on the shelf by March 1st. This will simplify installations and frankly, will be the best product in the market. We also expect to have the, long promised, DirectVent Flex available in the 2nd quarter of 2021. Although we’ve have had equipment on order from Europe for a while, it has been delayed several times. We are expecting it to ship soon and plan to roll out product as soon as it is ready.

We are looking to improve and add to our product lines and you will see continued product improvement changes throughout the year. Additionally, you can look forward to seeing new product videos and whiteboards added to our current YouTube library. Those are just a few of the projects going on here at DuraVent/ Security Chimneys that are keeping us busy. As always, we are open to any suggestions for improvement that you may have.

Here's is to a better 2021!

Sincerely yours,

Light on Weight, HEAVY on Performance

Over the last year-and-a-half, our engineering team has been quietly working on a special project involving DuraTech. Our mission?  Find a way to get rid of the continuous shield components (premium shields) that are required with one-inch chimney when paired with solid-fuel space heaters. The role of these shields is to prevent radiation heat energy from overheating and igniting surrounding combustible materials. The shield requirement arises when the chimney serving a solid-fuel space heater passes through a finished floor above, or if the chimney is chased (enclosed) within an attic. Professional installers have always despised these additional shields. They add cost, they add labour, and they add complexity.  Sadly, there are installers who are completely unaware these shields exist. Far too many installations have been completed over the years without them. For years, experienced installers have been asking/demanding the chimney industry to address this problem. Our engineering team found a new, proprietary insulation that is more effective in blocking the passage of radiant heat. For our part, we have always stated we would do it when we were confident it would not compromise fire safety, performance, or long-term durability. So we are proud to announce we are the very first Canadian manufacturer with a true one-inch chimney that can make this claim. Insulating with DirectVent

None of us worry about moisture problems until they happen. When they do, they cause a huge headache for the homeowner. How can we prevent this problem before it even happens? The difficulty comes when a new homeowner has so many different trades involved in their home construction. From plumbers to gasfitters to electricians, you have a lot of people cutting holes in your home. This makes it difficult to keep track and pinpoint where a moisture problem may be coming from. Not taking care to repair these openings properly will result in a world of hurt for the homeowner. Fortunately, in these cases, an ounce of prevention can save the homeowner gallons in damage. The problem has proven so widespread among solid-fuel fireplace installations that it prompted DuraVent to research, test, and ultimately approve the use of non-combustible rock (mineral) wool insulation around the wall thimble on sidewall penetrations and support boxes used for vertical attic terminations.
